How to find the right wedding photographer for you?

Are you in the process of planning your wedding? If so, one of the most important decisions that you will need to make is choosing a professional wedding photographer. This can be a daunting task, as there are many talented wedding photographers out there. But how do you know which one is right for you? In this blog post, I will offer tips on what to look for when choosing the right photographer for your big day!

Tip #1 Choose your style

When choosing a photographer, you first need to decide which style you are drawn to. Do you want classic and posed shots? Or do you prefer natural and candid moments?

Wedding photography styles:

There are three main photography styles: traditional, documentary, and contemporary.

Traditional wedding photography is all about staged images and posing. The photographer will direct you and your partner on how to stand, what to do with your hands, where to look, etc. They will also often use props such as bouquets, chairs, or arches. This type of photography is often romantic and classic.

Documentary wedding photography is about capturing the day as it unfolds. The photographer will take a more fly-on-the-wall approach, and will not interfere with the events of the day. They will capture natural, authentic moments as they happen. This type of wedding photography is great for couples who want to remember their wedding day exactly as it happened.

Editorial (fashion) wedding photography is a mix of heavily posed, fashion vibe, magazine-like photography, and documentary photography. An editorial wedding photographer has to pose their models for most of the photos, but will also capture candid moments. The popularity of this wedding photography style might have to do with the ‘perfect’ pictures of brides and grooms on Instagram.

Once you have decided on a style, you can start looking for photographers that specialise in that particular style.

Tip #2 Research your wedding photography options

The next step is to research your options. Look at the portfolios of different wedding photographers and see if their style matches what you are looking for. Create a list that includes the ones that you resonate with and are within your planned budget. It is also a good idea to ask for recommendations from friends or family who have recently gotten married.

When looking at portfolios, pay attention to the following:

-The quality of the images

-The range of emotions captured

-The overall feel of the images

These are just a few things to keep in mind when looking at portfolios. Once you have narrowed down your list, you can start reaching out to photographers and setting up consultations.

Tip #2 Meet with potential wedding photographers

While it’s important to have beautiful wedding photos that capture all the details of your big day, it’s also essential to make sure that you click on a personal level.

Look for someone who is not only skilled in taking great wedding photography but who makes you feel comfortable and can capture the emotions of the day. After all, you’ll be spending a lot of time with your photographer on your big day!

The best way to see if you’re a good fit is to meet with your potential photographer via a quick Zoom Call (or in-person).

This will give you a chance to get to know each other and to see if there’s chemistry. Don’t be afraid to ask them any questions you have about their process or their experience. You should also be prepared to share your own vision for your wedding day.

This will allow you to have a face-to-face conversation and to get a sense of what it would be like to work with the photographer.

What to expect from your wedding photography package

Typically wedding photography prices packages for an experienced wedding photographer will start £1500-£2200 and will include coverage of the bridal/ groom prep, ceremony, and reception, as well as portraits of the bride and groom and group photos with their family and friends. Some photographers may also offer extras like engagement photos, second photographers, or albums.

Personally, my starting package includes eight hours of coverage with the option to add extras, depending on my clients’ needs. This basic package usually covers everything in between bridal prep, starting two hours before the ceremony and the first dance.

Engagement photos

Engagement photos are a great way to get to know your photographer and to get comfortable in front of the camera before your big day. This is also a good opportunity for your photographer to get an understanding of your style and what you are looking for in your wedding photos.

Second photographer

Some couples choose to add a second photographer to their wedding photography package. This can be especially helpful if the bride and the groom are getting ready in different locations or if you are planning on having a large wedding. A second photographer will be able to capture more candid moments of the groom before the ceremony, greeting the guests whilst the main photographer will be taking photos of the bride as well as a different angle during key moments.

Wedding Album

If you are looking for a way to preserve your wedding photography, an album is a great option. Wedding albums are typically an add-on to a photography package and can range in price, depending on the size and quality of the album.

Tips for working with your wedding photographer on the big day

If you’ve followed the steps above, then by the time your wedding day rolls around, you should have a good idea of what to expect from your photographer. Here are a few final tips to make sure things go smoothly:

– Make sure to communicate your vision in advance. This will ensure that your photographer captures the photos that are most important to you.

– Trust your photographer’s expertise and allow them to guide you. They will know how to capture the best moments and light.

– Relax and have fun! Your wedding day is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so enjoy it!

These tips should definitely help you choose the right photographer for your wedding day.
